Girls Take the Court: Twentynine Palms to Celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day with Basketball Clinic on February 16th
The City of Twentynine Palms Parks & Recreation Department is proud to announce Girls Take the Court: A Girls Basketball Clinic, a special event honoring National Girls and Women in Sports Day, made possible through a $2,500 microgrant from the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and Nike. Twentynine Palms is one of only five agencies nationwide selected for this highly competitive grant, highlighting the city’s commitment to empowering girls through sports.
The free event will take place on Monday, February 16, from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. at the Twentynine Palms Community Center Gym and is open to girls ages 6–14. Participants will enjoy a fun, high-energy basketball skills clinic led by the Twentynine Palms High School Girls Basketball Team, with support from the Copper Mountain College Women’s Basketball Team, special guests, and exciting giveaway items.
Girls Take the Court is designed to be more than a clinic - it’s a celebration of confidence, teamwork, leadership, and belonging. The event aligns with NRPA’s Get Her in the Game initiative, which encourages communities to break down barriers that prevent girls from participating in sports by creating inclusive, welcoming opportunities led by positive female role models.
“When girls are encouraged to play, lead, and try something new, the impact reaches far beyond the court,” said Amy Tessier, Recreation Program Supervisor. “This event is about celebrating girls, lifting them up, and reminding them that sports can be a powerful space for growth, connection, and fun.”
Through skill-building, mentorship, and meaningful interactions with older athletes, Girls Take the Court aims to inspire the next generation of confident, resilient young women while strengthening connections between Parks & Recreation and local school and college programs.
The event is free, but pre-registration is required through Rec Desk. For more information, contact Twentynine Palms Parks & Recreation at 760-367-7562 ext. 1021.
