Pioneer Days Kick-Off with Mayor, Grand Marshal, Judge, and Sheriff

Pioneer Days Grand Marshal, Judge and Sheriff

On Saturday, October 1, the 86th Annual Pioneer Days Grand Marshal, Judge, and Sheriff were announced at the Pioneer Days Kick-Off. The City of Twentynine Palms is honored to have three incredible members of the community fill these positions for this year’s celebration.

This year’s Pioneer Days Grand Marshal is Oscar Bailey, a World War II veteran. At 95 years of age, Bailey has been involved in the Twentynine Palms community since the 1950s. Employed by M. Penn Phillips in 1956, Bailey built houses from Twentynine Palms to Hesperia before retiring in 1990. Bailey not only built homes but was also involved with local organizations including the Chamber of Commerce, Elks Lodge, Old Schoolhouse Museum, and more. At the Pioneer Days Kick-Off, Bailey reminisced on the early days of Twentynine Palms. He told attendees about the days when you would pick up the telephone and ask switchboard operator Blanche Loomis Ellis to patch you through to who you were trying to reach. Bailey is incredibly honored to be this year’s Pioneer Days Grand Marshal.

The Judge and Sheriff team for the 86th Annual Pioneer Days Parade are Judge “Iron Fist” Meliss and Sheriff “Lock ‘Em Up” Lisa. Melissa McGivern and Lisa Soliz are both employees at Twentynine Palms High School who have played a big role in the lives of many students who have gone through the high school. McGivern has coached both JV and Varsity Volleyball, JV Softball, and been a Class Advisor for several years. Soliz is the advisor for the Crochet for a Cause Club at the high school which took the community by storm last winter. The club of over 100 students crocheted scarves for the unhoused and less fortunate community members to keep them warm during the winter months. Both McGivern and Soliz are proud graduates of Twentynine Palms High School.

Grand Marshal Oscar Bailey, Judge “Iron Fist” Meliss, and Sheriff “Lock ‘Em Up” Lisa will all be in the Pioneer Days Parade on Saturday, October 15. The Parade begins at 10:00 a.m. at the corner of Split Rock Ave and Twentynine Palms Highway, will continue to the corner of Adobe Road and Twentynine Palms Highway, and end at the corner of Adobe Road and Sun Valley Drive.
