Duties and Responsibilities:
Under general supervision, the Streets Department Maintenance Worker I or Maintenance Worker II performs a variety of duties including but not limited to: construction, modification, maintenance, and repair of City infrastructure, including repair activities of City streets and roadways to ensure safe and efficient access for the public including sidewalks, curbs and gutters, storm water and drainage systems and facilities, asphalt pavement, crack seal application, concrete repair, traffic and street sign installation and repair, and traffic markings. Performs concrete work, including attending to trip hazards, demolishing, and removing concrete, and forming, pouring, and finishing sidewalks, curbs, and gutters. Performs legend painting and striping of City streets and parking lots using appropriate materials. Provides assistance with set-up and removal of equipment and facilities at community events; uses and operates a variety of manual and power tools and light to heavy power-driven equipment depending on assignment. The Maintenance Worker I position is distinguished from Maintenance Worker II in that the latter performs more complex work that requires additional knowledge, skills, licenses,as well as performs heavy construction equipment operations.
Minimum Requirements:
Maintenance Worker I Position Requirements:
- Must possess an equivalent to the completion of twelfth (12th) grade.
- Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License at the time of hire, with satisfactory driving record and automobile insurance.
- Possession of or ability to obtain Commercial California Class A Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements within six months of employment.
- This position participates in the DOT random drug/alcohol testing program
Prior experience in basic maintenance and construction related to Municipal infrastructure, facilities, streets, and systems.
Maintenance Worker II Position Requirements:
- Must possess an equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
- Possession of a valid California Class C Driver’s License at the time of hire, with satisfactory driving record and automobile insurance.
- Possession of or ability to obtain Commercial California Class A Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements within six (6) months of employment.
- This position participates in the DOT random drug/alcohol testing program
Two (2) years of experience in maintenance and construction of Municipal infrastructure, facilities, and systems equivalent to Maintenance Worker I at the City of Twentynine Palms.
Work experience including operation of heavy construction and maintenance equipment.

Health Insurance- CalPERS Medical: For 2026 the City pays up to $917.91/month for Employee,up to $1415.94/month for Employee+ 1 dependent,or up to $1720.84/month for Family towards CalPERS medical insurance.
Health Insurance Opt-Out Option:Employee must provide proof of current health insurance, and the City contributes $250 per month into one of the City’s 457 (b) plan of employee’s choice.
Dental and Vision Insurance:City pays 100% of dental and vision coverage for employee and their dependents.
Retirement Benefits: The City participates in the California Public Employees’ Retirement System:
CalPERS Classic Member:Prior CalPERS member qualifying public service, 2.5% @ 55, Employee pays 8% of the contribution.
CalPERS New Member (PEPRA):New CalPERS participants hired on or after 1/1/2013, 2% @ 62 - Employee pays 7.75% of the contribution.
The City does not participate in Social Security.
Sick leave:3.69 hours per pay period.
Vacation: 3.69 hours accrued per pay period, with higher increments accrued at years 5 and 10.
